Scottish Highland Games Demo
October 15 and 16 the Barony will be holding a demo at the Stone Mountain Highland Games from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. All members of the Barony and other local groups are invited and encouraged to participate. Over 30,000 people attend this event from all over the east coast and the nation. We are planning a full weekend of fighting, displays and other demos to both show the attendees our vision of medieval Scotland and to introduce them to the Society.
Although there are many (delicious) food vendors on site, if you are planning on bringing food please bring feast gear so as not to be eating off of paper plates and interfering with the ambiance. Everyoneparticipating should be sure to bring a mug for the same reason, no cans or Styrofoam cups are to be used in our demo area.
Last year this was fantastic demo resulted in new members for our group. Let us take this opportunity to show off the Dream and what a wonderful organization we can be.

Persian Dance, Silk Banners and Cotehardies on 8/24!
Coming up on August 24, 2011
At the Baronial meeting on Wednesday, August 24, there will be a wide variety of classes to choose from! From 7pm-8pm, Baroness Jadi will be teaching Persian Dance; from 7pm-9pm there will be a class on making silk banners, and also from 7pm-9pm, the Honorable Lady Peryn will be teaching a class on corehardie construction (details on this class, plus a materials list, below)! There's something for everyone, so we hope to see you there.
Cotehardie Construction
The Honorable Lady Peryn has provided the following information for good gentles planning on attending her cotehardie class:
Greetings!
I will be teaching a class on cotehardie construction for women and men for the 4th Wed class night. We'll start at 7pm and go to 9pm.
Cotehardies are the fitted dresses (women) and tops (men) seen on most western Europeans in the mid to late 14th century.
- Italian 1365-68
http://www.wga.hu/art/a/andrea/firenze/2right6.jpg - Italian 1350
http://www.wga.hu/art/n/nardo/strozzi4.jpg - French
Duc de Berry (February)
http://0.tqn.com/d/historymedren/1/0/2/H/2/february.jpg - French & Italian
http://vieuxchamps.com/persona/wgarb2.php - English
http://www.angelfire.com/planet/medievalsca/clothing.html
We'll start the class with a brief overview of cotehardies, then spend most of our time patterning for those that want to make one. This pattern will be the 7-8 panel style (with gores for dresses).
If you want to make a pattern please bring:
- cheap non-stretch cloth (woven cotton or cotton/poly works well)
- 5 to 7 yards for dress
- 3 yards for men's top (this style is great for men's padded gambesons under armor)
- Wear a fitted t-shirt that you don't mind getting pen marks on
Also bring if you have them:
- safety pins
- straight pins
- marker/pens
- sewing machine
- thread
- scissors
- seam ripper
- yard stick/straight edge
Those new to sewing are welcome. This is a beginner to intermediate class with long term support (I'm at most business meetings).

Twelfth Night Celebration
January 26, 2011
Important! Twelfth Night has been rescheduled to the fourth Wednesday of this month (January 26) due to the icy and unsafe road conditions here in Atlanta. On that evening, according to Baroness Jadi, "Persian dance will be cancelled. If the teachers desire it, the arts class and the SCA 101 class will be held from 8-9pm while revelry continues."
The Barony of South Downs will be holding a small, local Twelfth Night celebration at the Decatur Recreation Center (the same place where meetings are held - see directions) on Wednesday evening 7pm, January 26, 2011 (this is the rescheduled date). This event is potluck, so please plan to bring a dish to share (Lord Randwulf is coordinating the food, so please email to report what you're bringing). The Red Tower Tournament was held over the weekend of September 17-19, and witnessed the stepping down of Baron Cathal and Baroness Caroljane and the investiture of their new Excellencies Baron Hajji Turahan Karamani al-Arsalan and Baroness Jadi Fatima al-Ishfahani al-Samarkandiyya. Other events of the weekend:
- Both the Honorable Lady Lisette de Labbé St. Trônd and Margavati were made Companions of the Order of the Red Raven. the former at Baron Cathal and Baroness Caroljane's last court, and the latter at Baron Hajji and Baroness Jadi's afternoon fieldside court (the Red Raven is the highest award that can be given in the Barony of South Downs; it is an award for service)
- Max (the dog, to whom Lisette belongs) was given the name "Max Bottlesbane" by Baron Cathal and Baroness Caroljane
- Mistress Ginevra Bagnesi da Diacceto took Captain Cillian MacCauldwell as her newest associate (apprentice)
- Two new gentlemen of the highest order were honored with the South Downs Order of Chivalry: Sebastian Cornelius and Jacob O'Malley
- A lady of highest grace was honored as the most recent Heart of the South Downs: Lisette de Labbé St. Trônd
- Sebastian Cornelius received his Award of Arms (AOA), so he is now Lord Sebastian
- Rapier/Fencing at Red Tower (information courtesy of Yves de Fortanier):
- Baron Ximon Martillo de Cordoba, CP won the Sable and Azure List over HL Charles de Joscelynne in a field of ten fencers. In the Court held that evening, Ximon, who had moved here quite recently from the Kingdom of the West, received the victor's prize: a decorated fighting cape in Baronial colors made by Lady Madelena da Firenze.
- Lord Thomas MacAuslan (Owl's Nest) took third place with six wins in the list while Baroness Alysoun Jeuneterre, CP (esteemed visitor from Trimaris) and milady Alejandra de Salmeron (Owl's Nest) both had five wins each.
- Yves de Fortanier ran an unthemed passage of arms in the late afternoon that featured Mikolaj and Cillian as Defenders against those Challengers able to withstand the heat of the day (the heat index reached at least 95F with only the occasional breeze). After they opened the passage as two "Ancient Masters", Mikolaj and Cillian accepted challenges from the field. After several bouts, Yves consulted with the two Defenders and they invited Ximon to join them as a Defender for the rest of the passage.
More news from the event will be added as the Chronicler/Webminister gathers it. She is still missing final results for the heavy weapons tournaments, so if you have that, please send. Feel free to !
SCA Census 2010
August 1, 2010
The SCA 2010 Census is now LIVE!
The SCA is us, you and me doing what we do. But who are we, what do we do, and how can we support each other to make the SCA the type of organization we can be proud of?
The SCA 2010 Census committee has been asked by the Board of Directors to develop a census-level survey that will help us to address key issues facing the SCA. These issues affect our everyday experience in the SCA; from "pay for participation" issues and award structures to quantitative, qualitative, motivational, and behavioral demographics such as age, gender, activities and interest areas, and reasons for joining, remaining in, and leaving the SCA.
For more information, please visit the SCA Census Committee website, or go to take the SCA 2010 census directly.
